X-Ray Award to Jan Rothhardt

This year, the X-Ray Award of the University of Giessen, which is endowed with 15,000 euros, will be awarded to Dr. Jan Rothhardt on November 27, 2020, during a digital academic ceremony.
Dr. Jan Rothhardt receives the award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of laser technology, in particular for the development and application of laser sources for extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation and soft X-rays. Rothhardt was intensively engaged in applications of these laser systems and was able to show both computationally and experimentally for the first time that efficient conversion into the XUV spectral range is also possible with high power lasers of high pulse repetition frequency. The XUV sources developed by his team will enable worldwide unique laser spectroscopy experiments at heavy-ion storage rings. Quantum electrodynamics (QED), relativistic effects, but also nuclear properties and ultrafast processes are at the focus of these interdisciplinary experiments.
Excellent X-ray physicist and glider pilot
Jan Rothhardt studied physics in Jena and received his doctorate at the IAP in 2011. Since 2014, the internationally renowned laser physicist has been heading a junior research group at the Helmholtz Institute Jena & IAP and is author and co-author of almost 70 publications in scientific journals. He regularly receives excellent student evaluations for his lectures and seminars at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. In addition, he is committed to inspiring pupils for laser technology with a special experimental lecture at high schools. In his spare time, he likes to spend time in the clouds gliding and was world champion in this sport in 2016.
In memory of Nobel Prize winner Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who was a professor in Giessen from 1879 to 1888, the university there has been awarding the prize since 1960. The prize money is donated by Pfeiffer Vacuum and the Ludwig Schunk Foundation.
