Stefan Nolte nominated for the award Deutscher Zukunfspreis 2013

Prof. Stefan Nolte is one of the nominated persons for the "Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2013".

The Office of the Federal President announced three teams nominated for the final round of the Federal German President's Award for Innovation in Science and Technology. One of them is the team of Dr. rer. nat. Jens König (Spokesperson - Robert Bosch GmbH, Schwieberdingen), Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Stefan Nolte (Institut of Applied Physics & Fraunhofer IOF), and Dr. sc. nat. Dirk Sutter (TRUMPF Laser GmbH + Co. KG, Schramberg), with their project

"Ultra-short pulse lasers for industrial mass production - manufacturing with light flashes".

Together, they developed tools based on lasers that emit light in the form of high-energy laser pulses no more than a billionth of a second in duration. They allow extremely precise and reliable machining of material using lasers. The technology is already being used to manufacture many different high-tech products. Other nominated projects are "Crystalline circuit layers for vital displays - Bye, bye, pixels!" and "Energy-saving solid-state chemistry - new materials light up the world" In addition to innovative research, another of the criteria for the awarding of the Deutscher Zukunftspreis is the marketability of the products.

To be nominated, CEOs or chairmen of German scientific and business institutions must entitle up to three projects, and also review the scientific relevance and formal agreement of the projects with the statutes of the prize. A jury then categorizes the submissions and decides on the three or four innovations that will make it to the final round. The Deutscher Zukunftspreis, the Federal President's Award for Technology and Innovation, is endowed with 250,000 euros in prize money. It will be awarded on December 4 this year by Federal President Joachim Gauck who will announce the jury's decision at the gala event. ZDF will broadcast the award ceremony on December 4, 2013; the exciting event can be seen via live stream starting at 6:00 p.m.
