SCIENCE AWARD 2018 FOR FREEFORM OPTICS PLUS

The project "fo + - Freeform Optics Plus" has been awarded the Science Award of the “Stifterverband für Verbundforschung” 2018. The fo + team has been honored for an innovation that paves the way for new optical applications.

More and more technologies and solutions work with light. These include driver assistance systems, infrared optics for rescue teams or optical systems for environmental observations and telescopes. But as the need for innovative solutions grows, previous systems with spherical or aspherical optics have reached their performance limits.
The Thuringian so called Wachstumskern "fo + - Freeform Optics Plus" has now achieved a decisive breakthrough. Ten industrial partners, the coordinating Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF and our team from the IAP round Prof. Herbert Gross and Dr. E.-Bernhard Kley has developed a free-form optical system, which has it all: Its arbitrarily shapeable surface profiles make completely new functions possible, thereby delivering high-quality results and is also compact in format. For this joint effort, fo + has now received the Science Award of the Stifterverband für Verbundforschung 2018, endowed with 50,000 euros.

From 2014 to 2016, fo + was funded by the Federal Ministry of Research as an innovative regional growth center. The story of success should continue in 2018: Freeforms are to be transferred to the consumer market with medium and large quantities.
