Honorary colloquium "Holistic design of optical systems" for Prof. Herbert Gross

On the occasion of the 60th birthday of Prof. Dr. Herbert Gross the Institute of Applied Physics of the University of Jena has organized in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering the honorary colloquium on the topic " Holistic Design of Optical Systems " on 29 April 2015.
More than 80 guests attended the invitation to Jena. After the opening speeches of Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann and the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Prof. Dr. Gerhard G. Paulus, two lectures were held: "Holistic design and new developments in laser scanning microscopy" by Dr. Michael Kempe - Fellow Scientist from Carl Zeiss, and "Holistic methods for analysis and design of modern optical systems", which was presented by Prof. Dr. Alois Herkommer from the Institute of Technical Optics at the University of Stuttgart.

With his colloquium the great commitment of Mr. Gross in his career as an optics designer was honered, in which he published, inter alia, in addition to its activity in the industry 5 manuals on Optical Systems. His personal effort in teaching at the Friedrich Schiller University, for which he received the Teaching Award of students of Physics and Astronomy Faculty in its second year (2013), indicates his level of excellence. By this, the students in Jena honored many years of experience in teaching, which he gained at Aalen University, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Technical University of Ilmenau regularly since 1998. Beside his practical experience, Mr. Gross also brought a strong network with optics companies.
This characteristic of Herbert Gross' mixture of theory and practice was so interesting for small and medium sized companies in the region that they - together with the Ernst Abbe Foundation and the STIFT-Thüringen - endowed a professorship "Theory of optical systems" at the University of Jena, in order to impart this way of working to much-needed talents.

Due to the tight network around Mr. Gross it was not surprising that, among the guests were - in addition to the partners from the donor companies - also many former colleagues from Oberkochen and companies with long-standing contacts.
Prof. Herbert Gross was particularly pleased, because he knows that only vivid contacts have an added value professionally and personally. "At the university, it is almost easier to maintain a network, so I hope very much my contacts stay alive for a long time and there are more interesting topics and collaborations in future " says Prof. Herbert Gross during the following barbecue in the afternoon.
