The fact that we not only carry "applied research" in the name of our Institute, but also live that idea is demonstrated not only by contract research from the industry but also by the actually awarded Transfer Award for close-to-completion thesis at the "Gründer- und Innovationstag" on 03.11.2016. The award-winning master thesis by Thorsten Goebel about the topic of "High-robust ultra-short-pulse-written fiber sensor arrays" found solutions for the production of Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), which are important real-time measuring elements for temperatures, pressures, tensile and stretch stresses of bridges, roads or cable ducts. A particular challenge here led in the extreme measuring ranges e.g. for space technology in which conventional sensors fail.
In cooperation with FBGS Technologies GmbH from Jena, the FBG sensor chains could be realized with the help of ultra-short laser pulses and using the phase mask technique and have been successfully tested for their mechanical strength.

The Transfer Award - donated by the Federal Association of SMEs "Bundesverband mittelständische Wirtschaft" and Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft Jena - was awarded by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Heinzel in his function of the Vice President for Research.
In the Villa am Paradies, potential entrepreneurs should be able to talk to each other and find partners and supporters for joint projects at best. The event was organized by the K1-Gründerservice and the Gründerwerkstatt neudeli; guests and speakers were among others Minister Tiefensee and President Prof. Dr. Rosenthal.
