For his work in the field of optics and photonics, Dr. Alessandro Alberucci has been recently designed as an OSA 2020 Senior Member. The qualification is subjected to researchers with at least 10 years of experience in the field and active members of OSA. Most importantly, senior member designation is reserved to optical scientists who significantly contribute to the development of optics and photonics. In particular, research activities of Dr. Alberucci focused in the field of linear and nonlinear optics in anisotropic materials, with particular attention devoted to liquid crystals. Most of his works concentrated on the advancement of the knowledge about the self-trapping of light in liquid crystals. Another major contribution is the conception of a new type of electromagnetic waveguides based upon the Pancharatnam-Berry phase, recently highlighted in the special "Optics 2019" December issue of OPN (Optics & Photonics News), where the most relevant scientific discoveries in optics in the past year are presented.

We congratulate Alessandro on the scientific achievements and are pleased about the recognition of the OSA Society!

Before Dr. A. Alberucci came to Jena, he studied and worked in Rome and as a Postdoc at Tampere University of Technology in Finland. (Rights: Ira Winkler, IAP-FSU)
