Again, this year at the Photonics West, students of the IAP research group Fiber & Waveguide Lasers could take back home awards for their work.
Arno Klenke presented at the sub-conference "LASE: Fiber Lasers XI: Technology, Systems, and Applications" his results about "2.1mJ, 210W femtosecond fiber CPA system" and was awarded the 1st place in Best Student Paper. There, he describes a femtosecond laser system consisting of four parallel fiber amplifiers to face performance limitations. Each of the amplifiers emits ultrashort femtosecond pulses that are finally combined into one single output pulse. Using this technique, limitations of a single amplifier can be overcome and laser systems with unprecedented performance values can be realized. With this technique for scaling the performance even further, the variety of applications in scientific research is even broader.
At the same sub-conference, Christian Gaida was the finalist in Best Students Talk and won a trophy money of 500 USD for his results about "Short-length Ge-pedestal large-pitch fiber". In his student presentation Christian Gaida introduced a novel fiber design, which significantly improved the compactness of state of the art fiber lasers without losing any of its other advantages.
