3rd prize of the Lothar-Späth-Award 2018: awarded for development of ultra-short pulse lasers

The Jena cooperation in the field of solid-state lasers IAP, Fraunhofer IOF and Active Fiber Systems GmbH has been awarded 3rd place at the Lothar-Späth-Award 2018. Prof. Andreas Tünnermann and Bettina Limpert, Managing Director of Active Fiber Systems GmbH (AFS), received the prize for their development of ultra-short pulse lasers - in honour of the former Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, who died in 2016.

Since ultrashort pulse lasers are essential tools for the scientific market as well as for industrial material processing, their performance increase is substantial for applications. In recent years, however, this has stagneted due to the achievement of various physical and technological limits. The research partners AFS GmbH, our institute, the Fraunhofer Institute IOF as well as the Helmholtz Institute Jena with their respective potentials worked closely and successfully together and developed a fundamentally new concept, which has already been implemented in finished products.
In future, this concept, based of coherent combination of ultrashort pulse lasers, will enable a large number of disciplines to provide answers to fundamental questions - such as light-matter interactions or cancer therapy.
On 09.12.18, the Lothar-Späth-Award for outstanding innovations in science and economy was presented to Prof. Andreas Tünnermann and Bettina Limpert, Managing Director of AFS GmbH, at a ceremony in the White Hall of the New Palace in Stuttgart in anticipation of approx. 250 guests, among them Baden Württemberg's Minister of Science Theresia Bauer, EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger and the former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

Commenting on the award, Prof. Tünnermann said: "Strategic cooperation between science and industry is essential if innovations are to be quickly translated into applications. With this project we have demonstrated that together we are able to map the entire process chain of fiber laser technology - from basic research to the finished product. My sincere thanks therefore go to our partners, without whose trusting cooperation this success would not have been possible". Bettina Limpert, who coordinated the project from the industrial side, also expressed her sincere thanks. "The award encourages us in our task to push the limits of what is technically feasible a little further with every idea and every technology brought to market readiness. The technology of coherently combining ultrashort laser pulses has the potential to revolutionize many markets, so that we can look to the future with great optimism. We look forward to many more joint ideas, projects and developments".
