astrooptics is a joint Center of Innovation Competence formed by a strategic alliance of the successful Centers for Innovation Competence ultra optics in Jena and innoFSPEC in Potsdam. Exploring state-of-the-art photonic technologies for pilot applications in astrophysics and space exploration by realizing novel observation and measuring instruments, this project will use the extreme requirements of these applications as a stimulator for progress in photonic technologies. The successful realization of demonstrators and measurement devices for applications in astronomy will furthermore stimulate innovation processes and economic use of the developed technologies.
In the joint center, the competences of both partners will complement each other to allow for world-class research on astrophotonic instrumentation. This involves the development of fundamental technologies meeting the strict requirements of astronomy and demonstrating these new technologies in astrophysical experiments. Examples for devices to be realized by the joint center include optical filters created by laser inscription in multicore fibers, which could be a key component for the suppression of OH-spectral lines in earthbound observatories, or highly compact and functional optical imaging elements based on nanostructures, which will be needed for the next generation of astronomical instruments in the mid-infrared spectral range.
The Center of innovation Competence ultra optics from Jena will bring its expertise in micro- and nanostructuring, material modification with ultrashort laser pulses as well as in controlling light with nanostructured elements into the project. innoFSPEC is adding its expertise for astrophotonics and the development of instruments for astronomic measurements as well as direct access to many ground- and space-based observatories.
To enable optimal fulfillment of its scientific aims, the joint center also strives to extend its internationality, supports the promotion of young scientists, and strengthen its collaboration with the regional economy.
