Holistic design and simulation of modern optical systems " KoSimO "

The dynamic development of the technological production facilities in recent years, the availability of novel optical components and the massive application of digital techniques in signal and image development of optical systems as well as the merging of the disciplines of optics, mechanics and digital electronics makes it accumulative difficult to simulate novel system approaches already in the design phase and to interpret efficiently and optimally in its full functionality.

Therefore a holistic simulation of optical systems is currently possible only for rare cases. Hence, small and medium-sized enterprises that need to buy system components and do not have R & D departments, cannot simulate prototypes. Shorter development times and estimating the risks of new principles of operation but also the use of new components are therefore not available to the SMEs. Especially these possibilities of an early forecast of the function of an optical system represent an an important success factor for both; consumer products as well as technologically advanced products.
This project is intended to start at this point and extend the necessary opportunities for system design and optimization with respect to general models, to extend and re-create efficient computational algorithms especially from the viewpoint of practical implementation.
There are still a lot of research and development necessary to come to a systemic modeling, which links the mechanics, optics, electronics and signal and image processing.
