DIADEM - 3D image acquisition and processing with the highest continuous data throughput for human machine interaction and adaptive production

The goal of the project is the development of a fast measurement system with multi spectral image formation, adaptive structured illumination for active control of object distance, depth of focus and resolution. The layout of the illumination system uses freeform surfaces to optimize the setup. The camera system to observe the illumination pattern is a modified and optimized Scheimpflug system. Simulations are performed to evaluate the performance prediction of the new system.

The specifications of the new system are to be defined. The main properties of this innovative system are the speed of operation and the flexibility of supporting varying measurement setups. The optical system can be separated into the illumination and the observation system. The illumination part projects a structured illumination into the measurement volume. The approach of the pattern is an aperiodic sine structure, which delivers strongly relaxed requirements on the resolution and guarantees an easy operation of the image processing software. This goal is achieved with the use of freeform surfaces, which allow for a rather flexible generation of illumination pattern in a non-imaging mode. Furthermore one of the aims is here to be able to adapt the illumination to various conditions of the object distance, depth of focus and resolution.

In the observation system, the system layout is based on a traditional Scheimpflug camera lens. Do improve the performance and the well known shortcomings of this type of lens, Freeform surfaces and decentered diaphragms are used to get more comfortable conditions for resolution and photometric uniformity over the field of view. The sensor properties as well as the illumination data are taken into account to improve the overall performance of the system for 3D metrology with multispectral illumination.

The performance data of the complete system are simulated to perform a prediction of the receivable data for resolution, speed and contrast of the system. This virtual prototyping tool can be used to further optimize the system data.
