STEFFEN HäDRICH AND CHRISTIAN VETTER RECEIVED THE STIFT AWARD 2012 FOR "OUTSTANDING APPLICATION-ORIENTATED THESES AT UNIVERSITIES IN THURINGIA"

For his thesis about "Peak Power Enhancement of Ultra Short Fiber Lasers for High Harmonic Generation" Steffen Hädrich (fiber & waveguide lasers) obtained, besides the honor, a trophy money of € 3.000.
In his thesis he describes how to exploit nonlinear effects to overcome limitations of state-of-the-art fiber chirped pulse amplification systems. Particular emphasis is put on the development of experimental techniques for scaling fiber lasers to ultrashort pulses with simultaneously high peak and average power. This is e.g. realized by nonlinear compression in noble gas-filled hollow core fibers or optical parametric amplifiers. The realized laser systems are then used for high harmonic generation, which produces powerful extreme ultraviolet light. Such high power short-wavelength radiation will be beneficial for future applications in microscopy or surface science.

Within his diploma-theses "Femtosecond-Laser Induced Nanogratings in Fused Silica - A Versatile Platform for Birefringent Polarization Control", Christian Vetter (ultrafast optics) provided new aspects in the field of optics and photonics, especially in the field of realizing artificially birefringent structures and is rewarded with a prize of € 500.
Microscopy methods with highest three-dimensional resolution, such as those used in biology and medicine, require full control of the illumination light in amplitude, phase and polarization state. For this, usually different optical elements are used; the effectiveness of this approach depends critically on their alignment. Self-organized naogratings locally inscribed with ultrashort laser pulses into the volume of glas samples provide the opportunity to realize these functions in a single element. This example illustrates the potential application of the structures - the fundamentals have been investigated by Mr. Vetter in his thesis.

The awards ceremony takes place in the context of Business and Innovation Day on 13th November 2012.
