SAFE THE DATE 05.07! ZIK ULTRA OPTICS INVITES TO WORKSHOP SEMINAR

On July 5, 2016, the Uwe Zeitner (IAP) and Alexander Szameit (IAP) invite all interested guests to attend the concluding status seminar in the second funding round of the Centre for Innovation Competence (ZIK) ultra optics, to be held at the Fraunhofer Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics. For more than 10 years, Ultra Optics made fundamental contributions to understand the physical and technological possibilities of light and its status. Moreover, Ultra Optics explored and shifted the limitations of monitoring and controlling the properties of light that form the basis for the representation of future optical systems. It has created the requirements for basic elements of an optical system technology which enables the step from discrete components to fully integrated functional units. The workshop will offer invited talks from selected speakers such as

• Boris Hage, Universität Rostock
• Benedikt Bläsi, Fraunhofer-ISE, Freiburg
• Kurt Busch, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
• Philip Walther University of Vienna

Already in 2002, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) advertised the program "Centres for Innovation Competence" within the scheme "Unternehmen Region". Since its start at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2004, this program has stimulated a strategy process which led to a sustainable restructuring of the local research on optics and photonics. The first two Junior Research Groups established through this initiative were "Nanooptics" led by Thomas Pertsch (IAP) and "Laser Physics" lead by Prof. Malte Kaluza (IOQ). These two groups acted as nuclei for a professional focus and the establishment of the Centre for Innovation Competence ZIK ultra optics, which was designed by a coordinated appeal and investment policies of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Moreover, in 2011 another two Junior Research Groups were granted by the BMBF within a second funding period of ZIK ultra optics, providing financial support until 2016. These groups are concerned with "Diamond- & Carbon Based Optical Systems" and "Advanced Fabrication Technologies for Micro- and Nano-Optics" lead by the IAP scientists Alexander Szameit and Uwe Zeitner, respectively.

In the last years new lithography-based manufacturing technologies for high-resolution optical micro and nano-structures have been developed successfully under the direction of Dr. Uwe Zeitner. Grown from the history of the IAP and Fraunhofer IOF and based of the wide experience in the use of lithography systems further development of this technology has been driven. By using optical diffraction phenomena, optical sub-micron structures, e.g. effective media, novel metamaterials or innovative diamond-based nanostructures, can now be manufactured and have been converted into industrial applications.
In recent years, Prof. Alexander Szameit contributed fundamental insights - theoretically and experimentally - in understanding of the propagation of optical waves in various systems, which material parameters and structure are based on the different macroscopic manifestations of carbon. Highlights of this research include the realization of complex calculations using single photons on a chip, the discovery of a new surface state in the graphene structure and the first demonstration of a photonic topological insulator. A. Szameit achieved high international attention - as reported here. This workshop will be one of the last chance to interchange with him here in Jena because he received a professorship at the 'Universität Rostock'.

Due to its great success, ZIK ultra optics was the major driving force for the foundation of the Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP) in 2010 and fostered the integration of Jena's research on optics and photonics with a much wider scope. Today, Ultra Optics is the first of three ACP key research areas and a synonym for successful research at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena with structural roots in innovative training programs as well as cooperative industrial relations. In sum, numerous significant development stimuli of Ultra Optics during the last decade have led to the establishment of sustainable structures and cooperative relations with other institutions of science and economics, which reach out far beyond academia.

 At this time the 'Laser Display and Lighting Conference (LDC)' also takes place at Fraunhofer-IOF. Also the official ceremony for new building of the 'Abbe Center of Photonics' will be held on this day - so please try to come by public transport.
