IAP SCIENTISTS PUBLISHED IN "NATURE MATERIALS"


For over a hundred years, scientists have been striving to overcome Abbe's resolution limit. Arising from the wave character of light, it prevents conventional optical microscopes from resolving features smaller than half the wavelength. Advanced techniques such as near field- or fluorescence microscopy circumvent this limitation at the cost of losing real-time imaging capability.

Scientists at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, in close cooperation with Jun.-Prof. Szameit and his colleagues at the Institute of Applied Physics, chose a fundamentally different approach. In the prestigious journal "Nature Materials," the researchers now report on a purely mathematical technique that can improve the resolution of any microscope by a factor of ten (DOI: 10.1038/NMAT3289). This innovative method was developed in the research group of Prof. Mordechai Segev of the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. There, Alexander Szameit worked as a postdoctoral fellow from 2009 to 2011 and still works closely with his colleagues.
