EFFICIENT DESIGN DELIVERS AN EXCELLENT IDEA FOR THE TOMORROW'S CITY

Because of the project "efficient design", the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) are one of the 100 winners of the nationwide competition 'Excellent places in the land of ideas' 2013/14. For the first time, the competition is devoted to a theme: "Ideas find city". The initiative "Germany - land of ideas" and the Deutsche Bank pay tribute to ideas and projects which include solutions for the future challenges of cities and regions. With their project, the two institutes provide an answer to the question of how to combine exceptional design and renewable energy.

Photovoltaic modules were previously bluish-gray, brown or black elements. The research project "efficient design" challenge is to change this in the future and to generate more design options to the classic look of solar cells. So the customization of colors, shapes, building planners, logos and lettering are possible. Photovoltaic modules can now specifically fit the image of the city and allow the realization of design elements.
"We are pleased about the award of this innovative idea and hope thereby to create stimuli for new developments in the photovoltaic," says Prof. Andreas Tünnermann. The public awards ceremony takes place at the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften on November 29, 2013 at the Fraunhofer IOF.
