The 20th century saw the birth of laser technology. A technology that not only has captivated public imagination like no other but that, it is safe to say, has changed the world. Since the first light was emitted from a Ruby laser in 1960, the evolution of the technology has been relentless and extremely fast. In just 50 years the laser has become almost ubiquitous and essential for our everyday life. Thus, we can find lasers in complex scientific installations, but also in supermarkets, in expensive medical equipment, in music players, in military applications, in art conservation, etc. Laser technology is, without doubt, one of the most successful, economically important and versatile invention of the last century. Moreover, it is widely accepted that lasers have opened up new frontiers in many scientific disciplines (such as biology, medicine or physics), they have contributed to accelerate the development of those areas and, most important, they still continue to do so in the present day.

At the fiber & waveguide lasers group we are constantly striving for further developments in laser technology and, in particular, in fiber lasers. From all the laser concepts, fiber lasers are the one which has experienced the most dramatic development in the last decade. Fiber lasers have evolved from laboratory curiosities to full-fledged high-power systems with a deep penetration in both scientific and industrial applications.
